Networking Essentials who like to be forgotten
Networking Essentials who like to be forgotten
Arguably today, especially in big cities, almost every home / office / other buildings now have an internet connection. If you have an internet connection, have also ascertained whether it's ADSL Modem-Router, Wireless Router, or Access Point.
But there are some important things are often forgotten or overlooked:
1. Device that allowed the default password
Maybe 8 out of 10 who put up perangkat2 org tsb leave passwords in the default condition, by reason bermacam2. This is very FATAL because if a user can enter into the network, then he will easily access to the web configuration and do what he wants.
So, immediately check your device and change the password as hard and as long as possible (a combination of numbers and characters is recommended).
2. Wireless Network still uses the SSID / Wireless Network Name the factory default
Many of us who allow the SSID using the factory default, this is FATAL, why? Org are usually 90 percent leave the default SSID, wireless security as well let it default alias no security. Also by letting the SSID in its default state, enabling the "neighbors" are curious and ignorant to find information about the security holes of the product concerned and make your device as a means of exercise :-)
So you change the default SSID to a name you like.
3. No Security in Wireless
This is a continuation of the latter, many who use wireless devices but still no excuse to use security with security pake ribet kalo lah, is difficult or unreasonable grounds other. If you are not a public area network, why would you leave your wireless without security?
4. Wireless Security? Pake dunk WEP
Come on, guys .. This year 2010 (soon 2012, hiiiiii), why do you still use technology that already worn? Compatibility reasons? It makes no sense, all existing devices already support WPA/WPA2 (if by chance you are not lucky, the device wirelessnya not support WPA/WPA2, you can dispose of the device page and change the D-Link Wireless Product:-D)
5. Backup Config Files
Now all of a manageable network devices must have features to make backups of config files, so make sure you always backup your config file and save it in a safe place. When something happens on your device, you can restore it with ease.
6. Check the firmware of your device vendors and regular upgrades
There is no single vendor that guarantees homemade bug-free firmware. Any software must be just a bug, so always check whether your device has a firmware upgrade or not. For users of D-Link in Indonesia, can check in ftp://public.dlink.co.id
7. Document your Network
Perhaps many would have thought that network documentation is only for big companies where large networks as well. This is wrong, no matter how small network at home even though, need documentation. What should be documented? Hal2 simple like: IP address of the device masing2 and username / password from masing2 device.
8. Check the default security settings your device manufacturer
Once we observe many devices, especially ADSL modem / router, which has a setting that is dangerous congenital access WebUI / telnet / ping open from the WAN side! In other words, open your router device to be accessed by anyone from the internet. But there are opinions that say, but the khan to be able to access the Public IP have to know me first, so safe dunk? Safe? Hehehe whoa, if you do for fun, try to test some IP range mirip2 with Public IP you get, then you will find that they will be IP-IP can be accessed because the default security settings were wrong. So make sure you DISABLE access WebUI / telnet / ping from the WAN, and if you want to open for some reason, you have to change the listening port (there are several brands that do not have to change this feature.)
If you are a user ADSL Modem / Router D-Link, you can breathe easier because by default the device we block all access from the WAN and allows us to change the listening port if needed to open up access from the WAN.
If you find that there are devices ADSL / Router D-Link's open by default, immediately report it to us, we will fix this problem as quickly as possible.
